Aldea.
Aldea de Santa Fe is a master-planned community about ten minutes northwest of downtown Santa Fe. Set on 345 acres and designed on New Urbanist principles, Aldea preserves roughly 205 acres of open space, with walking trails, parks, and a small village center that gives the neighborhood a walkable feel. It's one of the more distinctive residential communities in the Santa Fe area, offering the look and feel of a traditional New Mexico village on a compact, well-maintained plan.
The character of Aldea is village-scaled. Homes are set closer together than in the estate communities, with front doors that open to sidewalks and shared courtyards, and the streetscape reads as continuous adobe. Views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the open space around the community reach into most lots. For homeowners, the appeal is a maintained neighborhood, a strong sense of community, and the ability to lock the door and travel without leaving a large property behind.
Homes in Aldea follow Pueblo Revival architecture within a coherent design code: earth-toned stucco, flat parapet roofs, vigas and canales, deep-set windows, and portales that shade the east and south exposures. The design code allows contemporary interior detailing inside traditional facades, so many owners choose modern interiors with the traditional exterior character preserved. Custom new builds and full remodels are both common types of projects here.
Building or remodeling in Aldea involves an Architectural Review Committee that approves every proposed exterior change against the community's design code. That process protects the neighborhood character and adds a step to the timeline that a builder needs to plan for from the beginning.
