Monte Sereno.

Monte Sereno is a gated hillside community in the northwest foothills of Santa Fe, about ten minutes from the historic Plaza. The community covers 950 acres and holds only 180 homesites, each on a minimum of 2.5 acres, so spacing between homes is generous and view corridors are preserved by design. The land steps up the hillside above the Bishop's Lodge corridor, with sweeping views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the east, the Jemez to the west, and the Sandias visible to the south on clear days. For homeowners who want the topography and views of a hillside site paired with the security of a gated community, Monte Sereno is one of the more distinctive addresses near Santa Fe.

The character of Monte Sereno is estate-scaled and view-forward. Homes step with the hillside, with courtyards, terraces, and living spaces oriented to catch the mountain views and the changing high-desert light. The community's protected open space and low homesite density mean neighbors are typically at a distance, and the private roads and gated entry keep the setting quiet.

Homes in Monte Sereno follow one of three architectural vocabularies allowed under the design guidelines: Pueblo Revival, Territorial, and Santa Fe Contemporary. Pueblo Revival keeps flat-roofed earth-toned massing with vigas, canales, and deep-set windows. Territorial adds brick coping, squared portal posts, and painted milled trim. Santa Fe Contemporary carries the same palette forward with cleaner geometry, expanded glazing, and steel accents. Custom new builds and full remodels are the most common project types here.

Building in Monte Sereno involves the community's Architectural Control Committee, which reviews every proposed design against the current Design Guidelines before Santa Fe County will accept a building permit application. The process protects the neighborhood character and adds a step to the timeline that a builder needs to plan for.
